Perplexity AI Review: We Made It Our Default Search Engine for a Month

For thirty days we banned ourselves from typing queries into a traditional search box. Every question – work research, product comparisons, debugging, even dinner ideas – went through Perplexity instead. The experiment changed how we think about search, and it also exposed exactly where the answer-engine model is not ready to replace Google.

How Perplexity works, in one paragraph

Perplexity is an answer engine rather than a link engine. You ask a question; it runs its own web searches, reads the results, and writes a direct answer with numbered citations you can click to verify. Follow-up questions work like a conversation, so instead of refining keywords five times, you keep drilling into the same thread. It feels like having a research assistant who reads fast and always shows their sources.

What it gets right

Comparisons and “which should I buy” questions are superb. This is where Perplexity demolishes traditional search. “Compare the three cheapest cloud GPU providers for fine-tuning a 7B model” produces a structured answer with a table and sources in seconds – a query that would have cost us twenty minutes and six browser tabs.

The citations build real trust. Every claim is footnoted. When the sourcing is strong, you stop clicking; when it looks weak, you know exactly which answer to double-check. That transparency is something classic search never offered.

Focus modes cut the noise. Restricting a search to academic papers, or to Reddit discussions, or to news, turns Perplexity into a set of specialized research tools in one box. The academic mode alone has saved us hours of scrolling through paywalled abstracts.

Where it falls short

Navigational and local queries still belong to Google. “Open my bank’s login page,” “pharmacy near me,” or checking today’s sports score: a list of ten blue links with a map is simply the better interface. We kept Google – now as a fallback rather than a default.

Sourcing quality varies by topic. For tech and science questions, sources are excellent. For consumer health, finance, and anything that attracts content farms, the cited pages can be thin or mediocre – the citations make the weakness visible, but they do not fix it.

Free-tier limits arrive quickly for heavy users. The free plan covers everyday questions, but the more capable reasoning models and Pro Searches are capped per day. Casual users will not notice; researchers doing a dozen deep queries daily will.

Free plan or paid?

Start free. If you find yourself bumping into the Pro Search cap, or wanting the stronger models for multi-step research, that is the upgrade signal – not before. The pricing math for AI subscriptions generally, including when Perplexity is worth stacking alongside ChatGPT or Claude, is something we cover in our Free vs Paid comparisons.

The verdict

After a month, Perplexity has earned a permanent place in our workflow – but as a research layer, not a total Google replacement. For questions, comparisons, and learning something new, it is the fastest way from curiosity to a sourced answer we have tested. For finding a specific website or the nearest coffee, we still open the old search engine without guilt. Use both; assign each the job it does best.
